Assignment 2:

In class we spot about lynching and it was very interesting. I learned to look at many different things differently and pay more attention to the things that are going on today. When we saw the silent film Within Our Gates by Oscar Micheaux it made me really think. This was my first time ever looking at a silent film. When I saw the scene of the lynching and the rape scene I was confused and angry at the same time. I just didn't understand why people would do so many bad things to people because of the way they look. Then when we looked at the pictures it made me really thank God for those who died for me. To find out that people treated lynchings as they were shows, games, or a family event was just upsetting. All I could think of is that could ave been me or my family members. While reading "A Red Record" there were excuses that white people gave for lynching people. Some of these excuses were that they were protecting themselves from "Negro Domination," to keep blacks out of politics and from voting, because of the race riots, and because of the "sexual violation" blacks so called did to white women. These "excuses" were just ways for them to try to justify their actions. They know hat they were doing was wrong but they did not care because it was not happening to their group. In our class discussion yesterday the ideas we came up with really made their actions very clear not acceptable but clearer than before. This topic really brought out many ideas and I have to say that it was really a good topic and made me understand so much more.
